CORPORATE WELLBEING

MEDITATION & MINDFULNESS PROGRAMS

We spend more of our time working than doing anything else, and researchers have found that these hours are on average the least happy of our lives. Endemic stress accounts for a large proportion of workplace absence and represents a huge loss of national productivity. Meanwhile, success in most organisations relies on the very things that unhappiness and stress erode – collaboration, creativity, cognitive flexibility and effective decision-making.

Australian leaders and their people are feeling under pressure, always-on, distracted, information overloaded and quite frankly, overwhelmed. This pressure cooker pace of work and life is putting a huge strain on our inner resources and leading to higher levels of burnout than we’ve ever seen before. The never-ending pressure to do more, push more, achieve more, not to mention manage organisational and societal change is draining our physical, mental, and emotional energies. And, that was before we threw Covid, homeschooling, financial insecurities and months in lockdown into the mix.

The Australian Psychological Society (2017) reported that Australian’s are experiencing lower levels of  wellbeing and higher stress and anxiety than ever before, their report also found that mental stress claims are now the most expensive type of workers’ compensation claim. So these issues aren’t just impacting wellbeing. They are presenting significant challenges in disengagement, absenteeism and productivity due to mental and physical ill-health.

INVESTING IN CORPORATE WELLBEING

On the other side of the fence, a 2014 report by Beyond Blue found that Australian businesses will receive an average return of $2.30 for every $1 they invest in effective workplace mental health strategies. The research, which looked at the impact of employees’ mental health conditions on productivity, participation and compensation claims, also found these conditions cost Australian employers at least $10.9 billion a year.

With existing and emerging perspectives from psychology and neuroscience increasingly helping leaders to see that the cognitive and emotional resources of their colleagues determine the health, resilience and future performance of their businesses and institutions, it’s a wonder why employers aren’t addressing and investing in combatting workplace burnout, mental health and substance misuse issues, and what they can do to ensure their people aren’t victims of workplace burnout.

POTENTIAL BUSINESS BENEFITS

Resilience

Mindfulness within organisations equips individuals with self-awareness that helps them to recognise the signs of stress and respond more effectively

Relationships

How team members feel about their co-workers and managers can impact how effectively a team accomplishes tasks. Positive relationships help create productive teams, ultimately affecting a company’s bottom line.

Leadership

When it comes to effective leadership, resilience, collaboration and decision-making are vital. Mindfulness practice provides leaders with the capacity to notice their thoughts and intuitions with some perspective and as such have more freedom to choose informed responses over automatic reactions.

Decision-Making

Mindfulness has been proven to make us more likely to really see what is in front of us without being distracted by past experiences or long-held beliefs. Therefore, improving the quality of information considered in decisions, recognising ethical challenges, reducing our tendency to seek and trust patterns and reducing confirmation bias.

Creativity & Innovation

Mindfulness deliberately disrupts and erodes our habitual patterns of responding, leaving us receptive to new ideas and ways of thinking.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Follow the trail blazers. Leading organisations are taking the inside-out approach and focusing on employee wellbeing and development of soft skills. These organisations are investing their time, energy and money on building employee self-awareness and resilience, stress-management and emotional regulation, practicing mindfulness and self-reflection, keeping not only their employees, but their businesses, not just surviving, but thriving.

30-45 MINUTE SESSIONS

Studies show that learning mindfulness over a number of weeks allows the greatest opportunity to create long lasting change. Over a longer period of time participants have the space and time to experiment with applying principles and techniques in their daily life, finding ways to embed the practices into already existing operating rhythms of the business and share their experiences with peers.

For most benefit, these sessions would ideally be held weekly or even twice weekly as are proven to be most effective when held on a regular basis.

These classes can be held at your business or a separate off-site location, held before, after work, or during lunchtimes and can be customised to work for different group sizes or needs.

Virtual classes can be held on your organisation’s preferred platform.
